“Posted” - Modular Typeface
Inspired by postal stamps, "Posted" is a dynamic modular typeface designed from a collection of geometric modules. By subtracting circles from block shapes, we created distinct divots and holes, resulting in a clean, legible alphabet. The typeface stands out against a light greenish-tan background adorned with a subtle pattern of the modules used in its creation, ensuring that the type truly shines. Its bold presence is further amplified by vibrant orange and lime colors.
The playful tone of the typeface inspired the second poster, which draws from the charm of vintage travel advertising. This poster highlights California's rich plant life and harvest, offering a contrast to the man-made, blocky aesthetic of the modular type. To evoke a nostalgic feel, the elements surrounding the salmon silhouette of California were digitally painted, capturing the texture and brushstrokes of traditional techniques to transport viewers back in time.
DESIGN PROCESS
In exploring modular typefaces, I initially experimented with connecting separate shapes to form letters. My first sets featured half-moon shapes combined with lines and circles. Seeking a more calligraphic approach while maintaining modularity, I realized that this style might lack versatility. My aim was to develop a modular typeface with broader usability, so I shifted focus to subtracting shapes from blocks to create letterforms. Eventually, I constructed a modular typeface using building blocks made from rectangles and squares.
Building on these experiments, I combined the concepts of subtracting shapes from letterforms with those built from shapes and rectangles. By subtracting circles from rectangular building blocks, I achieved a distinctive modular look. Before finalizing the typeset, I made slight adjustments to certain letters, like the D and U, to ensure consistency and clarity.
To highlight the playful nature of my modular typeface, I chose bright colors. The name "Posted" was inspired by the subtracted circles, which resembled the edges of stamps, making it a fitting choice for a poster themed around vintage travel to California..
