K-Pop Band Promotional Design

NCT (Neo Cultural Technology) 127 is a well-known Korean Pop Band. Their main audience is young teens and adults around the world. This design is to promote the band and their music. Heavy layering, vibrant colors, and textures were applied to emphasize the band's eccentricity. Focus is put on the band members, since the group is what draws in their audience members. Clothing is less loud as the print material, so that it can be worn everyday with anything.

Dancing Shapes - Motion Graphic

"Balancing Act" is a motion graphic created in collaboration with another design student and a ballet student from ECU's School of Dance. Using royalty free music, this motion graphic depicts the descent into madness. The dark colors create an ominous and suspenseful aesthetic. The motions were inspired by various acts performed in circuses and acrobat shows. In between the circus acts, the loss of self can be seen with shapes pulling apart, them falling quickly and slowly, and emphasizing the shattered self.

SKETCHED & DIGITALLY ILLUSTRATED STORYBOARDS

For research, I browsed many examples of motion design. I viewed how they were used, read about how it was executed, and created simple exercises of stills showing possible motions (falling, wiggling, etc.) I listened to music samples to figure out what kind of story I wanted to tell. My design partner and I picked similar music, which was synth-wave, dark, and thrilling.

We collaborated with an advanced ballet student from ECU's School of Dance. During our meetings we discussed music choices, concept design, and the overall project guide. We all realized we wanted a similar concept for this project which was to illustrate a descent into madness. My design partner and I created two different motion graphics, while our dance partner created one dance.

Our song called Broken Silhouette, found on a royalty free site called Mixit, is mysterious and suspenseful. I drew inspiration from things like American Horror Story: Freak Show, Cirque Du Soleil performers actions and costumes, Black Swan, and dark colors to build up my concept. Using a triangle as the "main character" I thought it was good shape because of it's sturdiness but also its fragility, which is why I titled this project "Balancing Act". Another benefit was that the triangle, when manipulated/distorted could look menacing and dangerous.

INSPIRATION BOARD

Active Voice Campaign

This campaign is to promote education towards audience members who are less educated on anti-racism and privilege. The designs are to catch viewers attention and then direct them to the link at the bottom for further learning. For an inviting feel on a heavy topic, blues and pinks were utilized. A cake with a taken slice is a visual metaphor that all humans deserve to be treated fairly in school, the workplace, etc. That no one should get the smallest piece.

Conceptual Mobile App - “SAIL”

Sail is an app, for East Carolina University Undergraduate Admissions. Applying for your freshman year of college can be difficult and overwhelming. This app would help the student organize resources for the  application process. Using cool colors and organic shapes, these elements create the stress-free aesthetic for the student. Students can utilize different features such as chatting with a counselor, virtual reality tours of ECU's campus, browse campus events, and much more.

CREATED JUNIOR YEAR AT EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY (2019-2020)

Design Process

The instruction for the main project was to choose a partner that was local to Greenville, NC. I chose ECU Undergraduate Admissions and thought an app geared toward incoming college freshman would be interesting. I work as a Pirate Navigator (campus tour guide) and have spoken with many prospective students about college life and the application process. I've been able to see the general concerns that families and students bring up to me and other tour guides.

For research, I interviewed Rob Olewine who works as the assistant director of campus visits for ECU. I asked him questions about problems in the college application process, student and counselor contact, and changes he'd wish were available to disadvantaged student for campus tours. From our interview I gathered that my audience would be prospective students (freshman and transfer) and counselors/advisors. My primary user would be a freshman student coming from the eastern North Carolina region. This student comes from a low to middle class income family. They enjoy extracurriculars, especially community service. This student excels in school and wants to apply to the honors or scholars’ program here. This student is most likely interested in Business, Nursing, or some other Allied Health major. My app would allow this student to easily find information concerning the pre, during, and post process of applying to college.

For inspiration I looked at: Guidebook, ECU Guides, YouVisit Colleges, and College Hunch. I wanted to create a more stress-free experience for students since college applications are already overwhelming. Through an organized, clean display, students will have more access to everything admissions and more within one centralized app. Within the app you can read about and check your application status, Chat with counselors/advisors, Sign up for campus tours, Look at events hosted by admissions, and Check out special events. All of the main features hit the main components for that the user would be looking for within admissions. Special features include a virtual tour of ECU’s campus and listen to soundbites from current students.

The Application and Tour buttons were the most important features to be included. When students submit an application, they can see how their application is doing in the “check my application status” feature that would be connected to their Navigator account. The tour options show students different touring options besides the regular tour. The overall look and feel are clean, fresh, and simplistic. I wanted the buttons to stand out from a white background so that user could easily see the buttons and other features. I wanted to keep it light and airy to support that stress-free environment I was originally going for.

Locally I considered what prospective students look for the most within admissions. I also considered my own personal experience from going through the application process a few years ago. Also, after speaking with Rob Olewine I really got a good image about what students want to learn and how they apply. Globally this app could be applied to many different universities. The interface could be changed a little according to different universities and what they offer. I think if I were to expand this project, I would add in signing up for orientation, paying deposits, and maybe some features about campus housing & dining.
